Ice Hockey League Season 3: A New Era for Ladakh's Ice Hockey
Exciting Conclusion to Ice Hockey League Season 3
The recently wrapped Ice Hockey League Season 3 showcased intense competition among teams from Ladakh, highlighting the sport's growing popularity. In an interview with Kacho Shamshad from the Purig Warriors, he discussed the changing dynamics of ice hockey in the region, the significance of community backing, and how the League is attracting new talent.
From Casual Play to Competitive Spirit
Kacho reflected on his initial experiences with ice hockey, stating, "My journey began with casual games on frozen ponds, just enjoying time with friends. It was never serious back then. However, as the League introduced more structured competitions, I realized my potential to play at a higher level. The thrill of competition, scoring goals, and the cheers from the crowd motivated me to stay committed to the sport each winter."
Memorable Moments in the Finals
Kacho shared his emotions surrounding a pivotal goal in the finals, saying, "Scoring early in the final was a significant moment for our team. It boosted our confidence and set the tone for the game. Despite the intense atmosphere, I focused on staying calm. Although we didn't win, that experience taught me the importance of positioning and focus in crucial moments."
Transitioning from Player to Referee
Discussing his involvement in the Referee Training Programme, Kacho noted, "This season, I participated in a Referee Training Programme that transformed my perspective on the game. The training included virtual sessions on rules and decision-making, followed by on-ice training with an IIHF-certified instructor. This experience enhanced my understanding of the game, emphasizing the importance of strategy and communication on the ice. Now, I approach my role as a player with a broader perspective, focusing on teamwork and tactical awareness."
The Competitive Nature of the League
Kacho elaborated on the League's single-leg round-robin format, stating, "This season's format made every match crucial, as teams only had one chance to compete against each other. The tight competition meant that even a single win or loss could drastically alter the standings. This intensity pushed us to stay vigilant and improve after each game, enhancing my ability to handle pressure during critical moments."
Community Support and Ice Hockey's Growth
Kacho emphasized the community's role in the development of ice hockey in Ladakh, saying, "Ice hockey has always thrived on community support. Many of us were inspired by older players from our villages. While the initial structure was informal, the spirit of sharing and learning remains. Now, with initiatives like the Learn to Play programmes supported by Royal Enfield Social Mission, over 1,000 children from 24 villages are being introduced to the sport in a structured manner, strengthening the foundation for future players."
Looking Ahead: Aspirations for Players and the Sport
Kacho concluded by sharing his aspirations, stating, "I aim to enhance my skills as a player while contributing to the Purig Warriors and inspiring young athletes in Kargil. Additionally, my experience in officiating has made me more disciplined on the ice. Structured competitions are vital for our region's growth, as they encourage players to take their training seriously. If this trend continues, I believe players from Kargil and Ladakh will reach new heights in their performance."
