ICC Delegation Reviews Bangladesh Cricket Board Developments
ICC Delegation's Visit to Bangladesh
A two-member team from the International Cricket Council (ICC) recently traveled to Bangladesh to assess the situation surrounding the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). This delegation will compile its observations and present them to the ICC.
According to an official announcement from the ICC, the delegation included Dr. Mohammed AS Moosajee from Cricket South Africa and Tavengwa Mukuhlani from Zimbabwe Cricket. Their mission involved discussions with various stakeholders to evaluate the current state of the BCB.
Engagement with BCB Stakeholders
Upon arriving in Dhaka on June 1, Moosajee and Mukuhlani met with members of the BCB's ad-hoc committee, including its president and former captain, Tamim Iqbal. They also engaged with the BCB's election commission, which is preparing for elections scheduled for June 7, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
Concerns Over Upcoming Elections
The delegation also spoke with BCB directors who had resigned from the previous board. Among those who remained, Asif Akbar and Ahsan Iqbal Chowdhury held separate discussions with the ICC representatives on June 2.
Following these meetings, Aminul Islam, the former BCB president, asserted that they urged the ICC not to recognize any elections conducted by the ad-hoc committee on June 7 or any future dates. Aminul, who still identifies as the BCB president, called for a correction to the ad-hoc committee's May 31 press release regarding the ICC's visit.
Legal Challenges and Administrative Issues
A writ petition questioning the legitimacy of the BCB's election schedule and the voters' list was dismissed by the Bangladesh High Court. Justices Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Md Ashif Hasan stated that the petition was not properly presented, leading to its rejection.
This petition was filed on May 18, shortly after the sports ministry dissolved the BCB's board of directors on April 7, which resulted in the formation of an 11-member ad-hoc committee led by former captain Tamim.
