Hyderabad, June 22: In a startling event, police in Hyderabad detained an 18-year-old student who was taking the NEET re-test after he was discovered allegedly using a mobile phone hidden inside a washroom flush tank at the examination venue.
This incident took place on Sunday during the NEET re-examination held at a government school in Ragannaguda, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Adibatla Police Station.
The individual, hailing from Achampet, was caught at the examination center located at ZPHS, Ragannaguda.
Authorities reported that he had premeditated the cheating scheme by concealing the mobile device within the school grounds prior to the start of the exam.
According to the plan, the student arrived at the school around 7 A.M. and placed the mobile phone in the washroom ventilator, which was adjacent to the school compound wall. At approximately 11 A.M., he entered the restroom, retrieved the phone from a zip-lock bag, and hid it in the flush tank.
Despite police security teams conducting thorough inspections of the premises twice—once at 6 A.M. and again at 11 A.M.—and performing rigorous checks of all candidates at the entrance, the phone concealed in the flush tank went unnoticed during these initial examinations.
During the test, the accused complained of stomach discomfort and requested to use the restroom. This washroom, which is the only common facility for the entire examination center, is located a considerable distance from the main school building.
After noticing that the student had been in the restroom for an unusually long period, the invigilator dispatched several staff members to check on him. The student was caught in the act, actively searching for answers on his mobile device, according to police reports.
Upon notification, the police team promptly confiscated the mobile phone involved in the cheating attempt. A detailed examination of the device showed that he was using Google Chrome to look for answers, with no other concerning applications aside from Instagram. The student admitted to the cheating during questioning and is currently in police custody.
Following a formal complaint from the school administration, authorities have filed a case under Section 318(4) BNS and Section 10 r/w 3 of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act -2024.
