Humanitarian Crisis Looms as Myanmar Military Advances in Chin State

As Myanmar's military intensifies its operations in Chin state, the Hualngoram People’s Organisation has urgently requested humanitarian assistance. The situation is deteriorating rapidly, with fears that military actions could soon extend to settlements along the India-Myanmar border. Key localities such as Haimual, Khawmawi, and Rihkhawdar are at risk of becoming targets. The HPO delegation has sought support for civilians affected by the conflict, while ZORO leaders have pledged to provide necessary aid. This escalation follows a sustained military campaign aimed at regaining control of territories lost to resistance groups since the 2021 coup.

Aizawl, June 25: As Myanmar's military intensifies its operations in Chin state, the Hualngoram People’s Organisation (HPO), which governs the western region known as ‘Hualngoram’ under the Chinland Council, has urgently requested humanitarian aid due to a rapidly worsening security situation along the India-Myanmar border.

This week, a delegation from the HPO, led by Jacob V Zawma, visited Aizawl to discuss the situation with leaders from the Zo Reunification Organisation (ZORO), as reported by ZORO sources on Wednesday.

During their discussions, HPO representatives updated their ZORO counterparts on the recent military actions in western Chin State, noting that the junta's latest offensive has dramatically changed the security dynamics in the area. They indicated that junta forces have successfully regained control of several strategically vital towns, such as Falam, Tonzang, and Khampat, by deploying thousands of troops in a sustained counter-offensive.

The delegation expressed concerns that the capture of these towns, which are in proximity to Hualngoram-administered regions, could lead to an expansion of military operations into settlements along the Mizoram-Myanmar border.

HPO leaders voiced particular alarm that Haimual, Khawmawi, and Rihkhawdar—three crucial localities near the international border—might soon become targets for the Myanmar military.

According to a ZORO leader, the HPO representatives indicated that an assault by junta forces on Haimual, Khawmawi, and Rihkhawdar seems imminent and potentially unavoidable.

In light of the escalating conflict, the HPO delegation sought humanitarian assistance, especially in food and healthcare, to support civilians who may be impacted by renewed hostilities.

In response, ZORO leaders assured the HPO delegation that they would provide all possible humanitarian aid. Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii also indicated that healthcare support would be available as part of these humanitarian efforts.

These developments occur as Myanmar's military government continues its intensified campaign, initiated in late 2025, to reclaim key territories in Chin state that had been taken by resistance groups. This offensive has involved deploying thousands of troops with the dual aims of regaining strategic areas held by Chin revolutionary forces and re-establishing control ahead of proposed elections by the junta.

Since the violent clashes erupted following Myanmar’s military coup in 2021, much of Chin state has remained under the control of resistance groups aligned with either the Chinland Council or the rival Chin Brotherhood alliance.
