Steps to Take if You Are Trapped Inside a Car

If you ever find yourself in such a situation, the first step is to attempt to open the car door before it is submerged. Exiting the vehicle before it fills with water is significantly easier than trying to do so afterward. If the door cannot be opened, unbuckle your seatbelt and roll down the windows as quickly as possible. Then, make every effort to exit the vehicle.

If you are the driver, assume a brace position by placing both hands on the steering wheel at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions. This posture can help protect you from injuries caused by the airbag deploying upon impact with the water. If the car is gradually sinking, take two deep breaths and focus on escaping.

Act Quickly to Escape the Vehicle

You should aim to exit the car within 30 to 60 seconds. Concentrate entirely on the escape process. Try to open the windows before the water level rises, as it becomes increasingly difficult to do so once submerged.
