How to File Complaints Against Overcharging on MRP in India
Understanding MRP Complaints
MRP Complaint Online: Many retailers often sell products at prices exceeding their Maximum Retail Price (MRP), which is illegal and violates consumer rights. You no longer need to remain silent! If a retailer engages in such practices, strict action can be taken against them, as selling above MRP is completely prohibited. The good news is that the government has simplified the complaint process to protect consumer rights.
Immediate Action Against Overcharging
If a shop, mall, or restaurant charges you more than the MRP for any item, you can file a complaint immediately. The Indian government has established a national consumer helpline number, 1800-11-4000, where you can call directly to register your complaint. Additionally, the government has provided a website for lodging complaints. Remember, paying more than the MRP is not mandatory.
If you have a complaint regarding a product or retailer, you can visit consumerhelpline.gov.in to file your complaint online. When filing, make sure to include the product name, retailer's name, and a copy of the bill or photo. Once your complaint is registered, the relevant department will initiate an investigation, and action will be taken against the offender. In valid cases, customers may even receive a refund.
Tips for Consumers
If a shop, mall, or hotel demands a price higher than the MRP, remain calm instead of arguing. Immediately take a photo of the bill and product packaging, and if possible, record a short video clip. These will serve as evidence when you file your complaint. Most complaints arise from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, although cases are also reported from states like Delhi, Punjab, and Bihar. The government is continuously monitoring this issue to prevent consumer exploitation.
