How the PRASHAST App is Revolutionizing Education for Children with Learning Disabilities in India

Government's Commitment to Inclusive Education

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the government is focusing on the early detection of children with learning disabilities through the PRASHAST application, which has been developed by the Ministry of Education.

He highlighted that this initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to incorporate children with diverse abilities into mainstream educational settings.

These comments were made during a meeting with BJP MPs from Odisha, which took place during a break in Parliament.

The discussions revolved around various developmental challenges in the state, particularly concerning educational support for children who encounter obstacles in the learning process.

"Our main objective is to identify children who are struggling at an early stage, employ suitable teaching methods, and enhance their educational performance," he stated.

The PRASHAST (Pre-Assessment Holistic Screening Tool) app, developed by NCERT as part of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, allows schools to assess children for 21 recognized disability conditions under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Initial screenings are conducted by teachers, while special educators further validate and categorize cases for additional assistance.

This tool aims to prevent the mislabeling of children and ensures access to necessary certifications, concessions, and exam accommodations via the Unique Disability ID portal.

The Minister mentioned that Odisha's MPs committed to promoting awareness campaigns in their districts, ensuring that schools implement the app and facilitate the integration of children with various abilities into mainstream education.

He also noted that this initiative supports inclusive education as mandated by the Right to Education Act and NEP 2020, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal of providing quality education.

India has historically faced difficulties in supporting students with disabilities, and experts emphasize that early detection and intervention can significantly lower dropout rates and enhance learning outcomes. The PRASHAST initiative represents a systematic effort to incorporate inclusive practices at the school level.
