House Divided Between Two States Causes Family Distress
A Unique Property Dilemma
A house straddling the border of two states has been split into two sections, creating significant challenges for the family residing there. This unusual situation arose due to an order from the Haryana Power Corporation, which mandated the construction of a wall to separate the two halves of the home.
The property belongs to Jagvanti Devi, who expanded her house into Haryana. Approximately three months ago, she applied for an electricity connection, but the power corporation raised concerns about the house being located in both Haryana and Punjab. They stipulated that a wall must be built along the Punjab border to receive the connection.
To comply, Jagvanti Devi constructed a wall within her home, effectively dividing the Punjab section from the Haryana part.
Located in the city of Dabwali, at the far end of Haryana, the house is split between the two states. When Haryana was formed in 1966, borders were established with Punjab, leading to many homes being divided by a line. Jagvanti Devi's daughter-in-law, Rita, shared that Jagvanti was married to Raunak Ram and had built the house in the Punjab section.
According to Rita, they had been using electricity and water connections from Punjab. Recently, they constructed in the Haryana section and began paying property taxes to the Dabwali municipal council. The Public Health Department issued a water connection, but the Southern Haryana Electricity Distribution Corporation objected to the electricity connection. Surendra Monga, Jagvanti's son, mentioned that their security deposit had been returned twice, and they had to remove the wall to address the power corporation's concerns.
When approached for comments, Yugaank Jain, an official from the power corporation, stated that he was unaware of the details but would seek a report from JE Ravindra Pal on Thursday. He assured that he would investigate the matter personally, emphasizing that it should not come to a situation where a family has to remove a wall due to the power corporation's actions.
