Today, the entire nation commemorates 'Martyrs' Day' in honor of the great revolutionaries who bravely faced the gallows for India's freedom. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to the martyrs Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru on their death anniversary, stating that the nation bows in respect to their courage.

Significance of Martyrs' Day

Martyrs' Day, observed annually on March 23, marks the day in 1931 when these three revolutionaries were executed by the British. Since then, their sacrifice has become a powerful symbol of India's struggle for independence. The day is commemorated across the country with tribute gatherings, events, and programs that honor their contributions and keep their legacy alive.

The Story Behind Their Sacrifice

The events leading to their execution began in 1928 when protests erupted against the Simon Commission. During one such protest in Lahore, freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai was injured due to a police baton charge and later succumbed to his injuries. This incident deeply affected Bhagat Singh and his associates, prompting them to plan an attack on a British officer responsible for the assault. However, they mistakenly killed another officer, John Saunders.

A Bold Act of Defiance

In 1929, Bhagat Singh, along with Batukeshwar Dutt, executed a symbolic bomb blast in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi to protest against British laws. The intention was to send a strong message rather than to cause harm. On March 23, 1931, he was executed in Lahore Jail alongside Rajguru and Sukhdev.
