Hockey India President Defends Jersey Color Change Ahead of World Cup

Clarification on Jersey Color Change

Dilip Kumar Tirkey, the President of Hockey India, emphasized that the shift from the traditional blue to orange for the Indian hockey team's jersey was not driven by external influences or political motivations. He called on fans to rally behind the team as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup, urging them to refrain from unnecessary disputes regarding the new uniform. The new jerseys were unveiled in anticipation of the FIH Men's and Women's Hockey World Cups, set to commence on August 14 and 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium, respectively. This decision has stirred debate, with former Indian captain Viren Rasquinha and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressing their disapproval. Tirkey explained that orange was chosen from two options, yellow and orange, as it aligns with the colors of the national flag. He reassured fans that the jersey is not a permanent fixture and could be altered based on feedback from players and staff.

Technical Reasons Behind the Change

Tirkey addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding the jersey color, noting that many are approaching the topic from a political perspective, which he believes is misguided. He pointed out that the Indian team's jersey color has changed in the past, specifically in 2014 and 2018. "When I played, I wore dark blue as well," he remarked. He clarified that the recent change was not made under any external pressure but was based solely on the suggestions and opinions of players and coaches. The decision was influenced by practical considerations, such as visibility on the blue turf, which prompted the choice of orange for better coordination among players.

Encouragement for Team Support

Tirkey urged fans to support the Indian hockey team as they approach the World Cup, emphasizing that the jersey change was made with the players' best interests in mind. He reiterated that the orange jersey is not a permanent change and can be modified in the future if deemed necessary by the players and coaching staff. "Our World Cup begins on August 15 in the Netherlands, followed by the final round in Belgium. Let's encourage the team to perform well and return with success. It's crucial to avoid unnecessary controversies and disputes surrounding this decision, which was made solely for the benefit of the players," he stated.
