Historic Visit of PM Modi to New Zealand Strengthens Bilateral Relations
Significant Milestone for India-New Zealand Relations
Former New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to New Zealand, calling it a monumental occasion for the diplomatic ties between the two nations.
During a prominent sports event in Auckland, where PM Modi was joined by New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Taylor emphasized the importance of this visit, marking the first time in 40 years that an Indian Prime Minister has visited New Zealand. He stated, "It's a remarkable moment to have PM Modi here. This visit signifies his commitment to strengthening relations with New Zealand, and our PM Luxon is thrilled to welcome him."
Beyond Sports: A Growing Friendship
Taylor, a celebrated figure in the cricketing world, pointed out that the relationship between India and New Zealand extends beyond sports. He remarked, "We share a strong rivalry and friendship in sports, and this visit is beneficial for the business sector as well, especially with the upcoming Free Trade Agreement."
Sports Diplomacy and Future Collaborations
The visit aligns with the celebrations of '100 Years of Unity Through Sport,' commemorating a century of sporting connections that began with Major Dhyan Chand's historic tour in 1926. To enhance this legacy, both Prime Ministers recently endorsed the 'India-New Zealand Joint Action Plan on Sport,' aimed at fostering collaboration in sports science, high-performance coaching, and sports business.
When discussing the impact of sports diplomacy, Taylor noted that athletics can serve as a cultural bridge. He expressed hope for India's success in the 2036 Olympics and mentioned New Zealand's potential contribution through technology and innovations.
During a Gala Lunch hosted by PM Luxon, PM Modi reiterated the commitment to expanding the partnership beyond cricket to include sports like Rugby, highlighting a recent coaching initiative by New Zealand Rugby in Bhubaneswar as a positive step under the new Joint Action Plan.
Ross Taylor: A Legendary Career
Ross Taylor is celebrated as one of New Zealand's most accomplished athletes. Over his impressive 16-year international career, he became the first cricketer to play 100 matches in all formats, accumulating 18,105 international runs and 40 centuries.
Although he initially retired from international cricket in 2022, Taylor made headlines in 2025 by returning to the sport at age 41 to represent Samoa, his mother's birthplace. He debuted for Samoa in T20I during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup qualifiers in Oman in October 2025.
