Celebrating a Double Medal Win

Dilip Tirkey, the president of Hockey India, praised the Indian hockey teams for their remarkable achievement of winning gold medals in both the men's and women's tournaments. He highlighted the men's team's successful defense of their gold medal as a significant milestone and announced a cash reward of ₹11 lakh for the players.

Gold Medal and Olympic Qualification

The Indian men's hockey team triumphed at the 2026 Asian Games, defeating Malaysia 5-1 in the final. This victory marks India's second consecutive gold medal at the Asian Games, contributing to a total of 85 medals, which includes 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze. Additionally, this win secures India's qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

This historic win is particularly noteworthy as it is the first time the Indian men's team has defended its gold medal, achieving consecutive victories in 2022 and 2026. The men's team has now won five gold medals at the Asian Games, with previous wins in 1966, 1998, 2014, and 2022. Notably, this is the first occasion where both the men's and women's teams have won gold in the same edition of the Asian Games, making hockey the third Indian team sport to achieve a double-gold finish, following kabaddi and cricket.

Dilip Tirkey's Remarks on the Achievement

In an interview, Tirkey expressed his pride in the team's performance, stating, "Winning back-to-back gold medals is a fantastic achievement. We defeated Japan 5-1 in the last Asian Games and repeated the feat against Malaysia today. This is a historic moment for Indian hockey, as both teams have excelled together." He commended the players, coaching staff, and captains for their exceptional efforts, noting that the women's final against China showcased 'perfect hockey.'

"Our players and coaches performed excellently. Although we scored late, we secured a 5-1 victory. The most crucial aspect is our direct qualification for the 2028 Olympics, which was our primary goal. Both teams played their roles effectively, with the women's team demonstrating outstanding performance in the final," Tirkey added. He also announced a cash prize of ₹11 lakh for the men's team and ₹5.5 lakh for the support staff.

Gratitude Towards Government Support

Tirkey expressed his gratitude to the Odisha government for its ongoing support of Indian hockey. He stated, "The focus has always been on developing the sport and its players, and the government has played a vital role in that. I appreciate the Odisha government for their unwavering support, as well as the central government's assistance."
