Historic Victory for India as Veteran Cricketers Knight and Beaumont Retire
India's Dominant Performance at Lord's
In a remarkable display, India's women's cricket team achieved a stunning 270-run victory over England in a one-off Test match held at the historic Lord's on Monday. This match also marked the retirement of veteran players Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont from international cricket.
Heather Knight's Legacy
Heather Knight, who debuted for England in 2010, concluded her illustrious career as the most-capped player for England Women. Over her career, she participated in 320 matches, accumulating a total of 8,017 runs, which includes six centuries. Notably, she became the first England cricketer to score centuries in all three formats, achieving her first T20I hundred in Canberra in 2020. Knight captained the England team from 2016 to 2025, leading them in 199 matches and securing 134 victories, including the 2017 ICC Women's World Cup title at Lord's.
Tammy Beaumont's Remarkable Journey
Tammy Beaumont, who retires after a distinguished 17-year career, is celebrated as one of the finest players in women's cricket. At 35, she leaves as England Women's leading ODI centurion with 12 centuries and is one of only two English women to have scored international centuries across all formats. In her Test career, she scored 614 runs in 20 innings, averaging 30.70, with a top score of 208. In ODIs, she amassed 4,738 runs at an average of 40.49, while in T20Is, she scored 1,975 runs with a strike rate of 110.08.
India's Historic Win at Lord's
The one-off Test at Lord's was historic for India, marking their first-ever Women's Test victory at this iconic venue. Chasing a daunting target of 457 runs, England was bowled out for 186 on the fourth day, with Deepti Sharma taking four wickets. This win improved India's record to seven victories, three draws, and one defeat in their last 11 Women's Tests, while also keeping their unbeaten streak in Women's Tests in England intact.
Yastika Bhatia made history by scoring the first-ever Test century by a woman at Lord's, as India declared their second innings at 341/7. Smriti Mandhana contributed significantly with 70 runs, and Richa Ghosh remained not out at 50. In the first innings, India scored 285, thanks to contributions from Mandhana (83), Harmanpreet Kaur (58), and Deepti Sharma (57), while debutant pacer Kranti Gaud took five wickets, dismissing England for 170.
England's batting struggled from the start, with Tammy Beaumont out for a golden duck and Heather Knight dismissed cheaply. Despite some resistance from Amy Jones and Sophie Ecclestone, England could not overcome India's substantial lead. The match was a fitting farewell for Knight and Beaumont, overshadowed by India's historic achievement.
