Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), described the upcoming inaugural T20 International between India and Japan as "more than just a cricket match." On Friday, the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) and BCCI announced that the men's teams from both nations will compete in a T20 International match to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.

In a post on X, Saikia remarked that cricket's evolution is influenced by key moments that extend the sport beyond its conventional limits. He stated, "The India-Japan T20I match on September 22, 2026, is a pivotal moment that will introduce international cricket to Japan, engage a new audience, and enhance the sport's presence in a region with significant potential."
He also acknowledged the foundational work done by Jai Shah, the current ICC Chairman, during his time as BCCI secretary, which has been crucial for the global growth of cricket.

Saikia highlighted BCCI's duty to expand cricket into new territories and foster connections with diverse communities and generations. The match, named 'The Suzuki Cup,' is scheduled to take place at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture on September 22, 2026. This event marks the beginning of the 'Sport 75' initiative, which emerged from discussions between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The initiative aims to enhance human exchanges and cooperation in sports between the two nations, especially with India's aspirations to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.

Naoki Miyaji, CEO of JCA, referred to India's visit to Japan as a landmark occasion.
