Beijing, May 14: On Thursday, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping commenced what Trump referred to as the “largest summit ever,” engaging in extensive discussions covering topics such as the Iran situation and trade tensions between the two nations.

After the initial round of discussions, Trump expressed satisfaction, responding with “great” when asked about the talks with Xi.

He refrained from answering further inquiries regarding Taiwan while the leaders posed for photographs at the Temple of Heaven.

“Some believe this could be the biggest summit ever,” Trump stated during his opening comments at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

“Whenever challenges arose, we found solutions. We are poised for a remarkable future together,” he added.

During his three-day state visit to China, Trump consistently praised Xi as a “great leader,” as reported by the state-run Xinhua News Agency. Their first meeting extended beyond two hours.

Accompanying Trump were prominent American business figures, including Jensen Huang from NVIDIA, Tim Cook of Apple, Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, and Larry Fink of BlackRock.

Xi, who had earlier welcomed Trump with a ceremonial guard, expressed optimism for 2026, anticipating it to be a “historic, landmark year” that would usher in a new phase in China-US relations.

“China and the United States share more common interests than differences,” Xi remarked in his opening address.

He emphasized the need for the two nations to act as partners instead of rivals, advocating for mutual success and prosperity while discovering the “right way” for major powers to coexist.

Regarding the trade disputes, Xi noted, “There are no winners in a trade war.”

Trump’s visit occurs amidst growing economic and geopolitical uncertainties tied to conflicts in West Asia and the subsequent global energy crisis, which has notably impacted Asian economies.

Earlier that day, Xi welcomed Trump at the Great Hall of the People, introducing him to senior Chinese officials before the two leaders reviewed a guard of honor prior to their formal discussions.

“China and the US must collaboratively address the challenges of our time,” Xi stated as the talks commenced, according to official Chinese media.

Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for this highly anticipated summit, which focuses on the Iran conflict, trade disagreements, and US arms sales to Taiwan.

He was greeted with a grand reception ceremony on Wednesday night, with his motorcade passing by rows of American and Chinese flags, and skyscrapers lit up with the message “Beijing Welcome” in Chinese characters.

Following the reception, Trump returned to his hotel without any public engagements scheduled for the evening.
