Historic Selection of Sons of Former World Cup Players in Argentina's Squad
Argentina's Remarkable Football Milestone
Nico Paz and Giuliano Simeone have achieved a remarkable feat by being included in Argentina's squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. This marks a significant moment in the 96-year history of the Argentinian national team, as it is the first instance where sons of former World Cup players have been selected.
The significance of this selection is heightened by the fact that their fathers, Diego Simeone and Pablo Paz, were teammates during the 1998 World Cup. Now, their sons are poised to represent the same national team on the road to the World Cup.
Unique Backgrounds of the Young Players
Interestingly, both players share a unique background, having been born outside Argentina. Nico was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, while Giuliano hails from Rome, Italy. Despite their foreign births, they have earned the honor of donning the iconic blue and white jersey of Argentina.
A New Chapter in Argentinian Football
While Argentina has seen father-son pairs play for the national team before, this is the first time a son of a former World Cup player has made it to the World Cup squad.
Pablo Paz, Nico's father, had a modest football career, earning just 14 caps for the national team. He played club football in Argentina and Spain, but not for any major clubs, despite a professional career spanning nearly two decades.
In contrast, Diego Simeone enjoyed a more illustrious career, representing the national team from 1988 to 2002 and earning 108 caps. He played for renowned clubs such as Sevilla, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan, Lazio, and Racing Club. Additionally, he has achieved significant success as a coach, leading Atlético Madrid since 2011.
A Familiar Face in Coaching
Adding to the connections, Roberto Ayala, who played alongside Pablo Paz in the 1998 national team, is now serving as the assistant coach. He is currently guiding the son of his former teammate.
