Record-Breaking Rainfall in Silchar


On Sunday, Silchar district in Assam experienced an unprecedented rainfall of 415.8 mm within a single day, setting a new record for the area since 1893. This figure surpasses the previous record of 290.3 mm, which had stood for 132 years.


Flooding Crisis in Assam and Surrounding Regions

The flood situation across Assam remains dire, with forecasts indicating further heavy rainfall on Monday. The state is grappling with the aftermath of the downpour, which has led to significant flooding.


In neighboring Manipur, over 19,000 individuals have been affected by flooding following four consecutive days of rain, resulting in damage to approximately 3,365 homes. Relief camps have been established, particularly in Imphal East, where areas like Heingang, Wangkhei, and Khurai have been severely impacted.


Rescue operations are underway, with the Army and Assam Rifles evacuating more than 500 residents from inundated areas and providing essential supplies.



Impact of Heavy Rains in Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh

In Mizoram's Aizawl district, schools were closed due to landslides and mudflows. Chief Minister Lalduhoma convened a meeting to coordinate relief efforts after reports of 211 landslides and four fatalities, along with damage to 60 homes.


Additionally, the Indian Air Force conducted rescue operations in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Dibang Valley, saving 14 individuals stranded by floods.


Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reached out to the chief ministers of Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, offering support from the central government in response to the severe weather conditions.


The India Meteorological Department has warned of ongoing heavy rains across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
