A Major Upset in West Bengal Politics
West Bengal has witnessed a remarkable and unprecedented political shift that has completely altered the state's political landscape. According to the latest booth-wise results released by the Election Commission, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has not only defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhawanipur assembly seat but has also handed her a significant defeat in her own home ward. This victory fulfills the electoral pledge made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who stated that "Mamata must be defeated in her own stronghold."
Suvendu Adhikari's Impressive Victory
The recent booth-wise data from the Election Commission reveals Suvendu Adhikari's overwhelming win in Bhawanipur. He secured leads in 207 out of 267 booths and triumphed over Mamata Banerjee in Ward No. 73, where her residence is located. In this ward, Suvendu garnered 8,932 votes, while Mamata managed only 4,284 votes.
Prior to the West Bengal assembly elections, Amit Shah had clearly instructed BJP workers that the goal was to defeat Mamata in her own territory. Shah remarked, "I told Suvendu Adhikari that he must defeat Mamata in her home area."
Suvendu's Unexpected Success
Hailing from Kanthi, approximately 150 kilometers away from Mamata Banerjee's Kalighat residence, Suvendu Adhikari had no prior political base or organizational strength in this southern Kolkata constituency. Nevertheless, he managed to secure more than double the votes compared to Mamata in her own ward.
Suvendu received 63% of the votes, while Mamata was left with only 30%. Even more astonishing was the margin of victory; in several wards, Mamata failed to secure even 50 votes.
Each booth in Bhawanipur had around 400 to 700 voters. However, Mamata Banerjee received only 43 votes at booth number 14, 42 at booth number 16, 41 at booth number 20, 45 at booth number 24, 40 at booth number 77, 41 at booth number 89, and just 31 at booth number 105. She also received 44 votes at booth number 149, 46 at booth number 158, 29 at booth number 176, 40 at booth number 242, 28 at booth number 249, and 30 at booth number 263.
A Shift in Voter Sentiment Since 2021
It is noteworthy that after losing to Suvendu Adhikari in the Nandigram seat during the 2021 assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee won the Bhawanipur by-election, securing leads in all seven wards at that time. However, this time, the sentiment of the Bhawanipur electorate appears to have changed dramatically. In total votes:
Total votes for Suvendu Adhikari: 73,917
Total votes for Mamata Banerjee: 58,812
