Historic Milestone: Modi Surpasses Indira Gandhi's Tenure Record

A New Era in Indian Democracy

New Delhi, July 25, 2025: A significant chapter has been added to the history of Indian democracy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a remarkable milestone today. He has won three consecutive Lok Sabha elections (2014, 2019, and 2024), breaking the record for the longest continuous tenure held by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Modi is now the second leader to serve as Prime Minister for an extended period, with only India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, ahead of him.

Modi first took the oath of office on May 26, 2014. As of today, July 25, 2025, he has completed a tenure of 4,078 days. This surpasses Indira Gandhi's record of 4,077 days (from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977) by one day. With this achievement, Modi has become the second leader to hold the Prime Minister's office for the longest duration.

This milestone signifies not just a personal political victory but also reflects the strength of Indian democracy and the trust of the populace. Modi formed his first government with a full majority in 2014, secured an even larger victory in 2019, and returned to power for the third time in 2024. He is the first Prime Minister born in independent India to come from a non-Congress party (BJP) and hails from a non-Hindi state, Gujarat.

Key Achievements and Context

  • Three Consecutive Terms: Modi has served as Prime Minister three times in a row, becoming the second leader after Jawaharlal Nehru, who led from 1947 to 1964.

  • Total Tenure: Including his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat (approximately 13 years), Modi has led elected governments for over 24 years, the highest among all Prime Ministers.

  • Strengthening Democracy: The electorate has endorsed initiatives like development, good governance, self-reliant India, Digital India, Make in India, GST, and Ayushman Bharat through these three victories. In the 2024 elections, the NDA coalition formed the government, but Modi's popularity and leadership provided stability once again.

  • Comparison: Nehru's continuous tenure lasted 6,130 days (16 years and 286 days), which remains the longest. Modi is now progressing towards Nehru's record.

This achievement marks a new chapter in Indian politics, where an individual from a humble background has made history through hard work, public engagement, and visionary policies. Prime Minister Modi's journey is a testament to the triumph of democracy, where the trust of the people becomes the greatest strength.
