Introduction of Armwrestling in Indian Universities

In a groundbreaking initiative for grassroots development in Armwrestling, the All India University (AIU) Armwrestling Championship was inaugurated at Maharana Pratap University in Aligarh. This event, organized by the People's Armwrestling Federation of India (PAFI) under the guidance of the Association of Indian Universities, marks the first time Armwrestling has been included in the AIU, paving the way for aspiring athletes nationwide to engage with the sport at the university level.


Dignitaries at the Launch Event

The launch ceremony featured notable attendees, including Prof. Naima Khatoon, Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, who served as the Chief Guest. Other prominent figures included Parvinn Dabass, Co-Founder of the Pro Panja League, and Preeti Jhangiani, President of PAFI and Vice President of the Asian Armwrestling Federation (AAF). The event also welcomed Vijaya Singh, Zila Panchayat Adhyaksh, and Prof. Narendra Bahadur Singh, Vice Chancellor of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh State University, as Guests of Honour. A total of 52 universities from across India participated, showcasing the increasing interest in Armwrestling among youth.


Nurturing Future Champions

During the launch, Parvinn Dabass emphasized the significance of introducing Armwrestling into the university framework, stating, "This is a monumental advancement for the sport in India. Universities are hubs of untapped talent, and this initiative will help us discover and cultivate future champions. Structured competitions like this are essential for establishing a robust grassroots ecosystem, enabling young Armwrestlers to develop and compete at elite levels."


Preeti Jhangiani echoed these sentiments, remarking, "This championship represents a proud moment for the Armwrestling community in India. By integrating the sport into universities, we are providing thousands of young athletes the chance to explore Armwrestling seriously. Grassroots development is crucial for any sport, and initiatives like this will help uncover new talent nationwide, shaping the future of Indian Armwrestling."


Event Highlights

The championship also featured an exciting Pro Panja League Mega Match, where professional Armwrestlers Abhishek Raghuvanshi and Vishal Choudhary competed, with Choudhary winning decisively with a score of 3-1 in front of an enthusiastic audience.


In the girls' left-hand category, Teja P from Calicut University claimed the first title, showcasing her skills as a star player in the Pro Panja League, where she represents the Mumbai Muscle team.
