Historic Gold for Indian Women's Hockey Team at Asian Games
Celebrating a Historic Victory
Dilip Tirkey, the president of Hockey India, praised the women's hockey team for their remarkable achievement at the Asian Games. He highlighted their significant progress over recent months and their outstanding performances in both offense and defense. On Friday, the Indian women's hockey team made history by defeating the reigning Asian champions, China, with a score of 1-0, securing the gold medal and ending a 44-year drought for an Asian Games medal in Aichi-Nagoya. Ranked eighth globally, India surprised the fourth-ranked China in a tightly contested final, with Lalremsiami netting the winning goal in the 10th minute.
Tirkey Commends Team's Performance
In a statement following the victory, Tirkey expressed his joy, stating, "The women have made history after 44 years. Our last win was in Delhi back in 1982. As the President of Hockey India, I am incredibly proud today, witnessing the dedication the girls have shown over the years finally pay off. Their impressive performance during the World Cup was evident, and today they stand as Asian champions. The team's fitness and mental strength have significantly improved over the past six to seven months."
The Role of the Hockey India League
Tirkey also attributed the team's success to the revival of the Hockey India League (HIL), which resumed in the 2024-25 season. He noted, "In the last two years, the HIL has returned, featuring some of the best players. This has contributed to the development of our women's team. We effectively kept China from scoring, showcasing our strong defense, which is a source of pride for us."
Olympic Qualification and Tournament Highlights
This victory marks India's 76th medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, comprising 16 golds, 25 silvers, and 35 bronzes. The gold medal also ensures direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This achievement follows a challenging Olympic cycle for the Indian women's hockey team, which narrowly missed qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics after finishing fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Additionally, India's campaign was highlighted by impressive goal-scoring, with Deepika Sehrawat emerging as the tournament's top scorer with 21 goals, followed by Navneet Kaur with 10 goals, while China's Jiaqi Zhong scored nine.
A New Era for Indian Women's Hockey
After a long wait of four decades, Indian women's hockey has once again claimed its place at the top of Asia.
