Once a promising amateur boxer and an Indian Army havildar, he faced a life-altering incident in December 2006 when he lost a leg due to a landmine explosion while serving with the Gorkha Rifles in Jammu and Kashmir. His rehabilitation at Pune's Artificial Limb Centre led him to discover a new passion for para athletics, and he joined the Army Paralympic Node in 2017. Soman has since represented India at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympics, accumulating accolades including a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Para Games and a bronze at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships. His recent gold at the Commonwealth Games adds to his impressive achievements at the age of 43.
Shubham Juyal: An Inspirational Journey
Shubham's path to the podium is equally inspiring. Originally from Roorkee, he aimed to follow in his father's footsteps by becoming an Army officer and had successfully passed the written exam for the Army Cadet College entry scheme in 2022. However, a tragic motorcycle accident that year led to the amputation of his leg, forcing him to pivot from his original dream. While recuperating at the Artificial Limb Centre in Pune, Shubham opted for para sports instead of vocational rehabilitation and joined the Army Paralympic Node under coach Rakesh Singh Rawat. His training alongside top para athletes has positioned him as a promising contender in the F57 category. Prior to the Commonwealth Games, Shubham had achieved seventh place at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships and earned medals at various national competitions.
