Historic Fun Run Kicks Off 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Kerala
A Record-Breaking Participation in Kerala
On Tuesday, over 40,000 participants made history as India hosted the inaugural 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Fun Run in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The event was launched by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, at the University Stadium, with notable attendees including Kerala's Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar, Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha, and Kerala's Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, O. J. Janeesh Kumar.
Celebrating Kerala's Sports Culture
During his address, Mandaviya commended the Indian Olympic Association, Kerala Olympic Association, and all contributors to the event's organization. He emphasized Kerala's unique position in India's sports landscape, stating, "Kerala holds a significant place on India's sporting map, with its enthusiasm for sports evident in both its champions and its citizens." He also mentioned that 115 athletes from Kerala, including 69 women, are currently part of the Khelo India program, while 17 athletes are receiving elite training under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
A Vibrant Community Event
The Fun Run attracted enthusiastic participants from schools, sports organizations, and the general public across Kerala. The event featured performances by the Indian Army Band, Zumba sessions, and showcases of bodybuilding, yoga, and gymnastics.
India's Ambitious Sporting Goals
Mandaviya also discussed India's future sporting ambitions, revealing that the country has secured the rights to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and has bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. He noted Prime Minister Modi's vision for India to rank among the top 10 sporting nations by 2036 and the top 5 by 2047, coinciding with the centenary of India's independence.
Grand Finale and Community Engagement
Following the Fun Run, a grand rally featuring roller skaters, electric scooters, and Bullet motorcycles took place, engaging over a thousand children and youth. The festivities culminated in a vibrant closing ceremony at the Central Stadium, showcasing a strong community spirit.
P. T. Usha's Pride in the Event
P. T. Usha expressed her pride in hosting the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Fun Run, marking a significant milestone for India. She highlighted that this initiative, taking place in her home state, will inspire and support athletes. Additionally, she mentioned that 100 commemorative replicas of Asian Games medals are being distributed as part of the event.
