Significant Legislative Discussions on Women's Reservation

Today marks a pivotal moment in Indian parliamentary history as discussions regarding the 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies are set to conclude. A historic vote is scheduled for 4:00 PM today. The government introduced three significant bills on Thursday: the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill 2026, the Delimitation Bill 2026, and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill 2026, aimed at implementing this reservation.

Debate on these bills continued until 1:20 AM on Thursday, with further discussions planned for Friday morning.

Opposition Concerns and Government's Stance

Opposition parties have accused the government of using women's reservation as a means to strengthen its political base through delimitation, potentially undermining the representation of other backward classes. They argue that the reservation could be implemented based on the current Lok Sabha strength of 543 from 2029, independent of delimitation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged all political factions to unanimously pass the constitutional amendment related to women's reservation, warning that those who oppose it may face long-term repercussions.

Prime Minister's Assurance on Delimitation

While discussing the three bills, Modi emphasized that this issue should not be politicized and expressed willingness to acknowledge the contributions of opposition parties. He dismissed concerns raised by some members regarding delimitation, assuring that the previous ratios would remain unchanged and that any increase in seats would follow the same proportions.

Implementation of the Women's Reservation Act 2023

In a related development, the Women's Reservation Act 2023 has come into effect as of Thursday, as confirmed by a notification from the Ministry of Law. Amid ongoing discussions in Parliament about amending this law for implementation in 2029, the 2023 Act was officially enacted on April 16.
