Historic Day at FIFA World Cup: Four Matches End in Draws
Historic Draws at the FIFA World Cup
Atlanta (USA): In a remarkable turn of events, the FIFA World Cup witnessed a rare occurrence after 68 years, with four matches concluding in draws on the same day. The last instance of this happening was in 1958, making this a noteworthy moment in football history.
On Monday night, former champions Spain faced Cape Verde, a team ranked 64th globally, and the match ended in a historic goalless draw. Following this, the matches between Belgium and Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, as well as Iran and New Zealand, also resulted in draws.
Vozinha's Stellar Performance
Cape Verde's 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha, delivered an outstanding performance against Spain, successfully saving seven goal attempts. This achievement marks the best showing by a goalkeeper over the age of 40 in a FIFA World Cup since 1966.
Spain's Winless Streak Continues
Currently ranked 3rd in the world, Spain has now gone four consecutive World Cup matches without a victory. In the previous 2022 World Cup, they managed to win their opening group stage match but subsequently drew one and lost two.
Belgium and Egypt Share Points
In a match held at the Seattle stadium in the US, Belgium, ranked 10th in the world, ended up with a 1-1 draw against Egypt. Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt in the 20th minute. Romelu Lukaku, who entered the game in the 66th minute, made an immediate impact by intercepting a ball from the left side of the goalpost. His attempt to score resulted in an own goal by Egyptian player Mohamed Hany, leveling the match.
