Historic Cabinet Expansion in West Bengal: A New Era Begins
Significant Political Development in West Bengal
On Monday, West Bengal witnessed a pivotal moment in its political landscape as Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari executed a major expansion of his cabinet following a change in power. A grand oath-taking ceremony took place at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, where 35 legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took their oaths of office. Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath to the newly appointed ministers. With this expansion, Adhikari has entrusted key roles to his most trusted and aggressive leaders, aiming to dismantle the strongholds of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Constitutional Limits and Cabinet Composition
According to Article 164(1A) of the Indian Constitution, the total number of ministers in any state, including the Chief Minister, cannot exceed 15% of the total assembly members. This means that West Bengal can have a maximum of 44 ministers, including the Chief Minister.
A Diverse and Dynamic Cabinet
Following the oath-taking of 35 ministers, the Suvendu cabinet has now taken shape and strength. The expansion includes prominent leaders as well as young ministers of state (MoS) such as Rajesh Mehta, Indranil Khan, and Malati Rawa Roy.
Inclusion of Leaders Who Defeated TMC Giants
A notable aspect of this cabinet expansion is the inclusion of individuals who significantly defeated influential leaders of Mamata Banerjee's TMC in the recent elections. Leaders like Arjun Singh, Tapas Roy, Swapan Dasgupta, Shankar Ghosh, and former cricketer Ashok Dinda have been appointed, signaling a clear message from the Chief Minister about the government's aggressive and development-oriented approach.
List of Key Ministers in the Expanded Cabinet
In this extensive cabinet expansion led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, a total of 35 ministers have taken their oaths, with 23 key ministers listed alongside their constituencies and electoral backgrounds. Notable appointments include Deepak Barman from Falakata, Tapas Roy from Maniktala, Shankar Ghosh from Siliguri, Manoj Kumar Uraon from Kumargram, and Gaurishankar Ghosh from Murshidabad. Additionally, Swapan Dasgupta from Rashbehari, Kalyan Chakraborty from Khardah, Arup Kumar Das from Singur, Dudh Kumar Mandal from Mayureshwar, Sharadwat Mukherjee from Bidhannagar, Jagannath Chattopadhyay from Suri, and Arjun Singh from Noapara have also been sworn in as cabinet ministers. The cabinet also includes MoS such as Malati Rawa Roy from Tufanganj, Rajesh Mehta from Gopiballavpur, and Indranil Khan from Behala West, who have all secured their positions by defeating TMC's prominent leaders in the recent elections.
Towards 'Mission Sonar Bangla'
Immediately after the oath-taking ceremony, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari congratulated all the new cabinet members. Political analysts believe that this new cabinet has been formed with careful consideration of geographical and social equations, including regions like North Bengal, Jungle Mahal, SC/ST belts, and urban areas. The 35 ministers, who have emerged from the violent opposition of TMC, now face the daunting challenge of elevating Bengal to new administrative heights and restoring law and order.
