FIFA World Cup Trophy to Make Historic Debut in Guwahati

Guwahati, January 7: On January 13, Guwahati will experience a significant sporting event as the FIFA World Cup Trophy arrives in the Northeast for the first time, marking its return to India after over a decade.

This exhibition is part of the sixth FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour, with Guwahati being selected as the inaugural Indian venue for the Trophy's global journey leading up to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Officials from the Assam Sports and Youth Welfare Department are making special arrangements to ensure the event complies with FIFA's strict protocols.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa emphasized the significance of this event for Assam and the entire region.

“The FIFA World Cup Trophy will be unveiled in Assam on January 13 in Guwahati. This is a first for our state. After nearly 12 years, the Trophy is returning to India, and it’s a debut for the Northeast,” she stated.

Gorlosa mentioned that comprehensive measures are being implemented to adhere to FIFA’s security and handling requirements.

“We must comply with all regulations. The Trophy has specific resting periods and comes with its own security team. It will be welcomed with traditional Assamese and Indian cultural practices,” she added.

The Trophy will arrive in Guwahati on January 13 and will be transported directly from the airport to Barsapara Stadium, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will officially unveil it around 8:30 PM.

The event will commence at 3 PM and will include cultural and musical performances, featuring sessions from Coke Studio. Notable artists such as Shankuraj Konwar, Rito Riba, and Anup Jain are expected to perform. Entry to the event will be free, as confirmed by the minister.

This showcase in Guwahati is part of the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour, organized in collaboration with FIFA and The Coca-Cola Company.

The tour kicked off on January 3, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and will visit 30 FIFA member associations across 75 locations over more than 150 days worldwide.

FIFA officials noted that the Trophy Tour not only honors football's global heritage but also seeks to foster positive social impacts within local communities.

The arrival of the Trophy is viewed as a pivotal moment for Assam and the Northeast, firmly establishing the region on the global football stage.
