Guwahati, May 12: Himanta Biswa Sarma, a prominent leader of the BJP, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday. This follows the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) resounding victory in the recent Assembly elections, marking their third consecutive term in power.

The oath of office was administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya during a grand ceremony at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati. The event was attended by notable figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Wearing a traditional white kurta-pyjama, Sarma took the oath in Assamese, receiving enthusiastic applause from party supporters and NDA leaders present at the ceremony.

In addition to Sarma, four ministers were inducted into the new Council of Ministers. These included former Union minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) MLA Charan Boro, and the outgoing Assam finance minister Ajanta Neog.

The ceremony was attended by BJP national president Nitin Nabin, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from 22 NDA-ruled states, along with senior party officials, industrialists, and diplomats.

Religious leaders also had a significant presence, with 15 Satradhikars from Assam’s Vaishnavite satras participating in the event.

After taking the oath, Ajanta Neog expressed her pride in the occasion, stating, “Today is indeed a proud day for the entire state of Assam. The Prime Minister of India along with national leaders and delegates have come to bless the occasion.”

When asked about her preferred role in the new government, Neog mentioned she had no specific preference and would fulfill any responsibility assigned to her by the Chief Minister. She also emphasized her commitment to advancing women's empowerment in the state.

Earlier that day, Sarma was unanimously chosen as the leader of both the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party in Assam, prior to formally claiming the right to form the government.

Sarma first assumed the role of Chief Minister in 2021 after the BJP's victory in the Assembly elections. His second consecutive term signifies a further strengthening of the BJP's political influence in Assam, where the NDA achieved a historic 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, with the BJP alone winning 82 seats.
