Sarma Takes Oath Amidst Celebrations

Guwahati, May 11: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Himanta Biswa Sarma as he took the oath of office for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam. Modi praised Sarma as a “remarkable administrator” who has undertaken “groundbreaking initiatives” for the state.


Sarma's swearing-in ceremony took place in Guwahati, marking the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) return to power in Assam for a third consecutive term following a decisive victory in the recent Assembly elections.


In a social media post, Modi celebrated the NDA's ongoing electoral success in Assam and offered his best wishes to Sarma for his upcoming term. He stated, “A great day for Assam! For the third consecutive time, the NDA Government assumes office. Congratulations to Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji on taking oath. He has made a mark as a wonderful administrator and has done pioneering work for the state. My best wishes to him for the tenure ahead.”



Alongside Sarma, four other ministers were sworn in as part of the new Council of Ministers. These included former Union minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) leader Charan Boro, and senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog.


Modi also congratulated the newly appointed ministers, expressing hope that they would play a significant role in advancing Assam's development. He remarked, “Congratulations to Shri Rameswar Teli Ji, Shri Atul Bora Ji, Shri Charan Boro Ji and Smt. Ajanta Neog Ji on taking oath as Ministers in the Assam Government. My best wishes to them as they work towards strengthening the growth trajectory of Assam.”


The swearing-in ceremony was attended by numerous prominent BJP and NDA leaders, including Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from 22 NDA-ruled states were also present.


Additionally, the event saw the attendance of several notable religious figures, including 15 Satradhikars from Assam’s Vaishnavite monasteries, highlighting the cultural and political importance of the occasion.


US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, was also in attendance at the ceremony.



After the event, Gor expressed his gratitude for the invitation and emphasized the expanding commercial relationships between Assam and the United States. He stated, “Honored to have been invited to Guwahati today to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The United States and Assam have many commercial ties, and with the CM’s leadership we will identify many more win-win scenarios for both of our nations.”


Sarma first took office as Assam's Chief Minister in 2021. Under his guidance, the BJP has solidified its political influence in the state, successfully securing a third consecutive term in power.
