The Himachal Teachers’ Welfare Association has voiced serious concerns regarding the overdue payments and benefits owed to university educators, urging both the state government and university officials to act promptly.
Leaders of the association pointed out that the arrears related to the CAS and the UGC pay scale from 2016 are the legal entitlements of teachers, and the ongoing delay in disbursement is regrettable. They noted that this situation has led to growing frustration and discontent among educators.
General Secretary Dr. Ankush Bhardwaj remarked on the impact of rising inflation, stating that the suspension of the 13% Dearness Allowance (DA) has placed teachers in a precarious financial position. He called on the government to expedite the release of the outstanding DA.
Vice President Dr. Yograj highlighted the pressing need for adequate housing for teachers, indicating that the current accommodations are insufficient. He urged the construction of two new residential buildings on the university campus to improve living and working conditions.
Joint Secretary Dr. Anjali emphasized that teachers are merely requesting their rightful and legal benefits. She pointed out that educators have consistently contributed to the advancement of higher education in the state, and it is crucial for the government to protect their interests through proactive measures.
The association leaders warned that if their demands are not addressed soon, they may resort to a phased statewide protest. They clarified that their aim is not confrontation but rather a resolution through dialogue and constructive actions. However, ongoing disregard for teachers’ rights could compel them to engage in organized resistance.
The association urged the state government and university administration to make prompt and favorable decisions on these matters to enhance the academic environment within the universities.
