Una: A significant initiative towards sustainable industrial growth is underway with the establishment of a cutting-edge solid waste management facility in Haroli, Una district, as part of the Bulk Drug Park project.
The waste management plant, which will require an investment of ₹55 crore, is set to be built on a 16-acre site and is specifically engineered to manage hazardous organic and chemical waste through eco-friendly practices.
Advanced Technology for Safe Waste Disposal
This new waste disposal unit will utilize advanced incineration technology, designed to safely neutralize hazardous waste at extremely high temperatures. This method will adhere to environmental regulations, ensuring that air, water, and soil remain uncontaminated.
By facilitating responsible waste disposal, the facility aims to reduce the dangers linked to waste generated from pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Officials emphasize that this project represents not only a technological advancement but also a crucial element of Himachal Pradesh's strategy to harmonize industrial development with ecological preservation.
Backed by Central Government Funding
The initiative has garnered financial backing from the Government of India, highlighting the Centre’s dedication to fostering environmentally sustainable industrial infrastructure in states like Himachal Pradesh. This support aligns with a broader vision of promoting sustainable development in ecologically sensitive areas.
Beyond environmental advantages, the project is anticipated to create technical job opportunities for local residents and enhance public health by reducing exposure to hazardous substances. Authorities believe this facility could serve as a benchmark for waste management systems nationwide.
Green Vision for Industrial Growth
A notable aspect of the Bulk Drug Park is its allocation of 40 percent of the area as a green zone. This includes plans for afforestation, green belts, and open natural spaces integrated into the park’s layout. These initiatives are expected to preserve ecological balance in and around Haroli, establishing the park as a model eco-sensitive industrial area.
Once operational, the Bulk Drug Park is poised to become a flagship project exemplifying both industrial efficiency and environmental stewardship, a rare combination in large-scale manufacturing environments.
India’s ambitious drive towards pharmaceutical self-sufficiency is set to gain significant momentum with the development of the Bulk Drug Park in Haroli, Una district.
This facility aims to drastically reduce India’s reliance on China for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), potentially transforming not only the industrial landscape of Himachal Pradesh but also enhancing the nation’s strategic capabilities in drug production.
Currently, India imports over 65 percent of its API needs from China, with some essential, life-saving medications seeing this figure rise to 90 percent. This dependency has long posed a threat to India’s health security, especially during geopolitical tensions or disruptions in supply chains.
With an annual API consumption valued at approximately ₹40,000 crore, any changes in diplomatic or trade relations with China could significantly jeopardize India’s pharmaceutical supply.
