In a significant achievement for Himachal Pradesh, particularly the Mandi district, Bhupender Gupta, a prominent figure in the power sector and the Chairman & Managing Director of NHPC Limited, represented India at the esteemed India–Norway Business and Research Summit held at the historic Oslo City Hall in Norway.




Gupta was part of a high-profile Indian delegation led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which included the Prime Ministers of both India and Norway. This summit gathered policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and global stakeholders to discuss vital sectors such as clean energy, hydropower, green growth, food security, fertilizers, fisheries, shipbuilding, and technological research collaboration.




His involvement in this international summit is viewed as a testament to India's growing leadership in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure development, with NHPC playing a pivotal role in the nation's clean energy transition.




For Mandi and Himachal Pradesh, Gupta's representation on this global stage holds particular importance. An alumnus of the renowned Bijay High School in Mandi, he has built a remarkable career in India's power sector over the last three decades. His success is celebrated throughout the region, serving as an inspiration for aspiring engineers and young professionals from the hill state.




Gupta, who holds a degree in electrical engineering and an MBA in Operations Management, took over as CMD of NHPC in September 2025. Throughout his distinguished career, he has held significant leadership roles in major public sector enterprises, including SJVN Limited, REC Limited, and THDC India Limited, making substantial contributions to India's hydroelectric, thermal, transmission, and renewable energy sectors.




He has been instrumental in the planning, commissioning, and operation of several landmark projects, such as the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station—India's largest operational hydroelectric project—as well as the Tala Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan, the Khurja Super Thermal Power Project, and the Tehri Pumped Storage Project.




Industry experts recognize Gupta for his blend of technical knowledge, project management skills, and strategic foresight in advancing critical energy infrastructure initiatives. Under his guidance, NHPC has made significant strides on various major hydroelectric projects, including the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, one of India's most crucial clean energy initiatives. He also currently holds the additional role of CMD of SJVN Limited.




Coming from a family with deep ties to the energy sector and public service, Gupta's father, A.S. Gupta, was a distinguished member of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.
