In a remarkable achievement for the state of Himachal Pradesh, renowned author Pawan Chauhan from Mahadev village in the Sundernagar area has had his travel memoir included in the undergraduate syllabus of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.
This inclusion elevates Chauhan to a distinguished group of contemporary Hindi writers whose works are now part of university studies.
His memoir, which chronicles a challenging and spiritually enriching journey to Kinner Kailash, has been added to the BA second-year (third semester) curriculum under the Hindi textbook titled “Sahitya Vividhā.”
Starting from the 2025 academic year, students at 475 affiliated colleges of the university will engage with this text, showcasing the extensive academic reach of his writing.
A Broader Academic Impact
The textbook aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and features a prestigious lineup of Hindi literary figures, including Vinod Kumar Shukla, Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’, Harishankar Parsai, Ramvriksha Benipuri, Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi, and Uday Prakash. Chauhan’s inclusion among such esteemed authors highlights the significance and quality of his work.
Chauhan’s travel memoir has also been integrated into university programs in Kerala and Nagpur, indicating a growing acceptance of his writings within contemporary Hindi literature.
Diverse Literary Contributions
Beyond higher education, Chauhan's stories, poems, travelogues, and essays are included in school curricula across Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra, as well as in CBSE and ICSE-affiliated schools nationwide, broadening his audience.
A prolific writer, Chauhan has made significant contributions across various genres, including fiction, poetry, children's literature, and travel writing. His works, such as “Himachal Ka Bal Sahitya” and “Jadon Se Judaav,” are recognized as groundbreaking in their fields within the state.
His writings have been translated into multiple Indian languages, including Nepali. A research project titled “Critical Analysis of Pawan Chauhan’s Children’s Stories” was conducted at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala, reflecting an increasing academic interest in his literature.
Role as an Educator and Innovator
Currently, Chauhan serves as a Hindi lecturer at Government School Chhamyar, where he plays a crucial role in fostering young literary talent. His students frequently publish their works in esteemed journals and magazines across the country.
He is also known for introducing wall magazines in schools throughout Himachal Pradesh, an initiative designed to promote creativity and enhance reading and writing skills among students.
Awards and Recognition
Chauhan has received several accolades, including the First Pratilipi Editorial Choice Poetry Award in 2017 for his poem “Phegdé Ka Ped,” along with various honors in children's literature.
With this recent addition to a prominent university curriculum, Pawan Chauhan's literary journey reaches another significant milestone, highlighting not only his contributions but also the increasing recognition of Himachal Pradesh in the national literary scene.
