The Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Welfare Association (HPUTWA) has been actively pursuing its "Save University Campaign" for the ninth day, advocating for the preservation of the university's autonomy, academic freedom, and democratic processes.
During the demonstration on campus, several faculty members, including Dr. Shiv Das Katoch, Dr. Joginder Saklani, Dr. Ashok Bansal, Dr. Rajesh, Dr. Sanjay Sharma, and HPUTWA President Prof. Nitin Vyas, addressed the attendees.
Highlights from the Protest
- Dr. Shiv Das Katoch asserted that a university's essence is rooted in its ability to make independent academic choices, cautioning against unwarranted external influences.
- Dr. Joginder Saklani called on the government to enhance resources and facilities rather than impose restrictions, emphasizing the need to prioritize the welfare of educators and students.
- Dr. Ashok Bansal pointed out that autonomy encompasses not only administrative aspects but is also crucial for teaching, research, and academic governance.
- Dr. Rajesh advocated for open dialogue and institutional mechanisms to address concerns, warning against reforms that could jeopardize independence.
- Dr. Sanjay Sharma reminded attendees of the university's 56-year legacy in education and research, urging the need to maintain this through autonomy.
- Prof. Nitin Vyas emphasized that the nine-day protest signifies the unity and dedication of the teaching staff. He noted that while they support accountability and transparency, they will not sacrifice autonomy, warning that the movement could escalate if their demands remain unmet.
Support from Dharamshala Regional Centre
Simultaneous protests took place at the Dharamshala Regional Centre, where faculty and staff expressed solidarity with the campaign, chanting slogans like: “Make the university accountable, not subordinate; strengthen resources, not control. Reform, but don’t snatch autonomy.”
HPUTWA’s Position
The association clarified that their campaign is not directed against any individual or institution but is focused on protecting the autonomy, academic freedom, and institutional dignity of Himachal Pradesh University.
