Municipal Elections Overview

In Himachal Pradesh, the municipal elections held on Monday resulted in significant victories and some political stalemates. While Mandi and Palampur successfully elected their mayors and deputy mayors, the elections in Dharamshala and Solan were postponed due to insufficient quorum.

BJP Triumphs in Mandi

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a notable victory in Mandi, with Suman Thakur elected as Mayor and Jitendra Sharma (Johnny) as Deputy Mayor. The election process concluded smoothly after the newly elected councillors took their oaths, leading to celebrations among party supporters outside the Municipal Corporation office.

Upon taking office, both leaders expressed their commitment to enhancing urban development and civic facilities. Mayor Suman Thakur stated, "We appreciate the trust placed in us by the people of Mandi. Our focus will be on planned urban growth, improved sanitation, better roads, a reliable drinking water supply, and addressing public concerns promptly." Deputy Mayor Jitendra Sharma emphasized the importance of transparent governance.

Congress Maintains Control in Palampur

In Palampur, the Congress party retained its leadership, electing Radha Sood as Mayor and Neelam Malik as Deputy Mayor. All 15 councillors participated in the oath-taking ceremony, which was overseen by Additional Deputy Commissioner Vinay Kumar. The event was attended by prominent Congress figures, including MLA Ashish Butail, reinforcing the party's stronghold in the region.

Dharamshala Elections Postponed

The election for Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Dharamshala could not proceed due to a lack of quorum. Although all 17 councillors were sworn in at the Mini Secretariat auditorium, Congress councillors exited the proceedings before the elections could be finalized, leaving only BJP members present. Consequently, the elections have been rescheduled for July 1.

The oath-taking ceremony featured unique moments, such as Ward No. 15 councillor Praveen Kumar taking his oath in Sanskrit, while some councillors donned traditional Himachali attire.

Solan Elections Also Delayed

Similarly, the elections in Solan faced a setback as the required quorum was not met. Following the oath-taking ceremony, Congress councillors reportedly withdrew from the election process, leading to a postponement. The elections are now set to take place on July 2 at 3:00 PM, with the Solan Municipal Corporation comprising ten BJP councillors, six Congress councillors, and one Independent.

Political Tensions Rise

The delays in Dharamshala and Solan have sparked a political dispute between the BJP and Congress. BJP president Rajeev Bindal accused Congress of obstructing the electoral process, while Congress defended its actions as part of a strategic approach. With Mandi and Palampur having successfully elected their leaders, attention now turns to the upcoming meetings in Dharamshala and Solan, where the remaining mayoral elections are anticipated to conclude.
