Significant Drug Crackdown in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh Police's Special Task Force (STF) has ramped up efforts in its state-wide Anti-Chitta Movement, initiated by the Chief Minister on November 15, 2025, aiming for a “Drug-Free Himachal.” Coordinated operations were executed in the districts of Una and Kangra.

On May 3, 2026, STF personnel established a checkpoint near Santoshgarh in Una District. During a routine inspection, they halted a vehicle with the registration number HP 20 J 6570 and discovered 1.005 kilograms of heroin (chitta) concealed by three suspects. The individuals were promptly arrested, and a case was filed under the NDPS Act at the Una Police Station. The estimated value of the seized heroin is around ₹2 crore in the international market.

Earlier, on May 2, 2026, another STF unit stopped a motorcycle with the number HP 37 D 8233 near Baijnath in Kangra District. A search revealed 1.792 kilograms of charas in the possession of two individuals, who were subsequently detained, and a case was registered under the NDPS Act at Baijnath Police Station.

These operations were led by Renu Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) for the Special Task Force, North Range, Kangra. Having joined as Additional SP just four months ago, Sharma oversees Kangra, Chamba, and Una districts. She is recognized for her proactive approach, having previously resolved significant narcotics cases during her tenure as DSP in Dehra from 2014 to 2017, including a notable seizure of 7.5 kg of charas. In December 2022, while working with the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, she uncovered a large-scale paper leak scandal involving examination papers.

Officials from the police department highlighted that these operations aim not only to combat drug trafficking but also to safeguard the youth from the detrimental effects of narcotics and to enhance public awareness. Citizens, particularly the younger generation, are encouraged to report any drug-related information to 112 or their nearest police station, with assurances that the identities of informants will be kept confidential.

With robust leadership from the Chief Minister and active involvement from the youth, the Himachal Pradesh Police has reiterated its commitment to eliminating chitta from the state.
