Governor's Initiatives for Fuel Conservation
In response to the ongoing crisis in West Asia and the rising global prices of crude oil, Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Kavinder Gupta, announced various cost-cutting and energy-saving measures on Wednesday at the Lok Bhawan in Shimla. He declared the Lok Bhawan as a "Fuel Conservation Zone" through a social media post, stating that no government vehicle powered by imported fuel would operate on Sundays. Additionally, he committed to using his official vehicle only six days a week, opting for electric vehicles or carpooling on the seventh day.
Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal for responsible fuel usage and administrative cost reduction, Gupta stated that all government work would be conducted from home on Sundays via video conferencing. He further announced that the size of his official convoy would be reduced by half, and all non-essential meetings would be held online to minimize unnecessary travel and fuel consumption.
As part of the cost-cutting measures, Gupta also mentioned that he would refrain from using the state helicopter until the current crisis in West Asia is resolved and fuel prices stabilize.
The Governor indicated that he would formally write to the Himachal Pradesh government, urging them to develop standard operating procedures (SoPs) aimed at conserving fuel and reducing public expenditure, in line with the Prime Minister's call for national resource conservation.
These announcements come against the backdrop of global energy concerns triggered by the US-Iran conflict and escalating crude oil prices. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation, encouraging citizens to adopt what he termed "nationally responsible" lifestyle choices to help the country navigate global economic uncertainties, inflationary pressures, and supply chain disruptions.
