Crackdown on Drug Abuse Intensifies

Shimla:
The Himachal Pradesh government is intensifying its efforts to combat the chitta drug crisis by initiating a mapping project to identify drug hotspots at the panchayat level. This initiative comes as preliminary investigations into narcotics distribution have commenced in over 200 villages throughout the state.
A Strategic Approach to Drug Prevention
The initiative, spearheaded directly from the Chief Minister's office, aims to disrupt the drug supply chain and prevent youth from falling into addiction. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, meetings of drug de-addiction committees have been organized in 234 panchayats identified as particularly vulnerable to substance abuse.
Focus on Vulnerable Panchayats
In this initial phase, the government has prioritized 234 panchayats severely impacted by drug issues. Local de-addiction committees have been revitalized and restructured to ensure active involvement. During these meetings, officials gathered village-level insights on drug trafficking, pinpointed emerging hotspots, and evaluated the prevalence of chitta and other narcotics.
Community Engagement and Awareness Initiatives
In addition to enforcement, the meetings emphasized the importance of prevention. Comprehensive discussions were held regarding the launch of awareness campaigns aimed at combating drug abuse and fostering community involvement in maintaining drug-free villages.
Encouraging Local Reporting
Panchayat representatives were encouraged to motivate community members, particularly families and youth groups, to report any suspicious activities without fear of repercussions.
Strengthening Community Ownership
Officials highlighted that enhancing community ownership is vital for breaking the cycle of addiction and drug trafficking, which often thrives in silence.
From Policy to Action
This panchayat-level initiative follows resolutions made during the sixth state-level Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) meeting held in Dharamshala on December 2. Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari stated that the Chief Minister has emphasized that the battle against drugs will not be limited to law enforcement or administrative efforts alone.
A Collective Movement Against Drugs
“This is a movement led by the people. Information provided by citizens will be crucial to our strategy,” Tiwari remarked, adding that actionable intelligence gathered from these meetings will lead to decisive and timely actions.
A Comprehensive Strategy for a Drug-Free Future
The government asserts that its multi-faceted strategy—integrating local intelligence, community involvement, and stringent enforcement—aims to achieve the overarching goal of a drug-free Himachal Pradesh.
