In a decisive move reflecting the Himachal Pradesh government's commitment to addressing rising public discontent regarding an alleged case of medical negligence at the Regional Hospital in Kullu, senior gynaecologist Dr. Anu Devi was suspended on Tuesday. This action was taken by Health Secretary Sudha Devi after days of intense protests, including road blockades, sit-ins, and hunger strikes, following the tragic death of 23-year-old pregnant woman Manju (Rajni) Sharma, who passed away after a Caesarean section on June 21.
The incident has escalated into one of the most significant public health crises in the district in recent memory. The family of the deceased accused the attending gynaecologist and nursing staff of severe medical negligence and insensitivity, claiming they failed to adequately respond to the young woman's complaints of extreme pain post-surgery. Protesters alleged that some nursing staff dismissed her condition as mere 'drama,' a claim currently under investigation.
The unfortunate event sparked widespread demonstrations throughout Kullu, with thousands of residents, social organizations, and political figures participating in the protests. Demonstrators blocked the busy Dhalpur Chowk highway for several hours and initiated an indefinite hunger strike, demanding the immediate suspension of the doctor and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.
In response to the escalating public pressure, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's government intervened and mandated disciplinary measures. The suspension of Dr. Anu Devi marks a significant administrative step in addressing public concerns and ensuring accountability.
Meanwhile, a magisterial inquiry initiated by the district administration is ongoing. A high-level committee, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and Chief Medical Officer (CMO), is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the treatment records, medical procedures, and the events leading to the patient's death.
This inquiry will also investigate claims that previous complaints and FIRs against the same doctor were overlooked by the hospital administration. Authorities are expected to assess whether institutional failures allowed these repeated complaints to go unaddressed. The role of the nursing staff is also under scrutiny, with protesters demanding that all individuals responsible for any negligence or misconduct face both disciplinary and legal consequences.
The family of the victim has expressed their approval of the suspension but insists that their fight will continue until the inquiry concludes and all accountable parties are brought to justice. Protest leaders have similarly characterized the government's decision as a crucial initial step while reiterating their call for transparent and timely action.
With the suspension enacted and the investigation underway, the Himachal Pradesh government has conveyed a strong message that allegations of medical negligence in public healthcare facilities will be taken seriously, with the final outcome hinging on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
