Intensifying Political Battle in Mandi

The Municipal Corporation and Panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh have escalated into a significant political contest, especially in Mandi, where the ruling Congress party is treating the elections as a matter of prestige. The opposition BJP is framing these civic elections as a crucial 'semi-final,' but the Congress's vigorous campaign indicates that they see this as a critical evaluation of their governance and public backing.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made a notable entrance in Mandi alongside senior party officials, launching a vigorous campaign to support Congress candidates. During his public addresses, he unveiled several major development initiatives that have notably altered the political landscape of the elections.
While addressing rallies, Sukhu reassured voters that wards electing Congress councillors would receive ample funding for development projects. He declared that post-elections, development estimates of up to ₹50 lakh for each ward would be prepared and sent to the government for expedited approval.
Additionally, the Chief Minister presented an ambitious urban development plan for Mandi, announcing nearly ₹180 crore in projects aimed at modernizing and enhancing the historic town. Drawing from his experience as a former councillor, Sukhu expressed his understanding of grassroots challenges and his commitment to improving civic infrastructure and public services.
In a pointed critique of former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, Sukhu questioned the development pace in Mandi during the BJP's administration. He claimed that the previous government failed to deliver the anticipated urban advancements in the area.
Sukhu further accused Jai Ram Thakur of focusing development efforts primarily in his home constituency of Seraj, while neglecting Mandi city. He condemned what he termed 'emotional politics' surrounding regional identity during the election campaign, asserting that Mandi belongs to all its residents, not just one political figure.
The Chief Minister also criticized the BJP regarding the establishment of the Municipal Corporation, alleging that it was not formed in alignment with public sentiment during their governance. He referred to the ongoing discussions about including rural areas like Behna ward, pointing out that leaders who previously approved the expansion are now seeking political advantage by calling for their exclusion.
In response, the BJP launched a robust counteroffensive against the Chief Minister's announcements, accusing the Congress government of engaging in 'election-time populism' and making unrealistic commitments.
BJP state executive member Prashant Sharma challenged the financial integrity of the Congress government, claiming it has not fulfilled several key promises made to the public. He pointed out the government's failure to implement the promised ₹1,500 monthly financial aid for women and alleged delays in pension payments to beneficiaries.
Sharma further asserted that a government reliant on financial support from the Centre cannot credibly promise substantial ward-level funding during elections. He characterized the announcements as politically motivated attempts to sway voters ahead of the polls.
As both Congress and BJP ramp up their campaigns and exchange pointed political jabs, the Mandi civic elections are increasingly seen as a pivotal political arena that could influence the broader political narrative in Himachal Pradesh in the months ahead.
