DHARAMSHALA: The state of Himachal Pradesh is set to experience its initial monsoon rains in the coming two to three days, with forecasts indicating a likely onset around June 21. Favorable atmospheric conditions point towards a timely arrival of the southwest monsoon, which is anticipated to deliver above-average rainfall this season. An orange alert has been issued for heavy rainfall from June 21 to 23.


Government Prepares for Weather Challenges


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already notified state officials about the impending weather changes, prompting the government to implement extensive preparedness strategies to mitigate potential weather-related emergencies.

In light of the approaching monsoon, a high-level review meeting was convened by Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena in Shimla. The focus was on ensuring readiness for the monsoon and enhancing inter-departmental coordination for disaster management.


Emphasis on Training and Coordination


The Chief Secretary stressed the importance of training civil defense volunteers, improving collaboration with dam management authorities, and ensuring the rapid restoration of blocked roads and disrupted water supply systems. All deputy commissioners have been directed to formulate and execute localized action plans.

During the meeting, the IMD provided a comprehensive overview of the monsoon's progress, historical weather trends, and the alert systems currently in place. The Central Water Commission contributed insights on flood forecasting and early warning systems.

Various departments, including Home Guard, Civil Defence, Fire Services, NDRF, and SDRF, reported on their readiness, available resources, and emergency supplies. District-level officials participated virtually, updating state leadership on their preparations.

The review meeting included key officials such as Additional Chief Secretary KK Pant and heads of various departments, including Health, Police, PWD, Jal Shakti, and HPSEB. Together, they discussed recommendations, exchanged feedback, and finalized action points to minimize the impact of monsoon-related disasters.
