Shimla:
As Christmas passes without snow in Himachal Pradesh's hill stations, forecasts suggest that snowfall may grace the region as the New Year approaches.

The cold weather is set to intensify, with meteorologists predicting that 2025 could begin with a picturesque snowfall. This news has sparked excitement among the thousands of tourists and locals flocking to the state's renowned hill stations for the holiday festivities.

According to the Meteorological Centre, weather patterns are expected to shift on December 30 and 31, just in time for New Year celebrations. Light rain and snowfall are anticipated in the higher elevations of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Kullu, and the upper regions of Mandi district. Meanwhile, the lower and mid-hill areas may experience rain and a further drop in temperatures as an active western disturbance approaches.

Fog Alerts and Tourism Buzz

Orange Alert for Fog in Bilaspur

The prospect of snowfall has heightened the festive atmosphere in the tourism sector. Hotels in popular destinations are seeing a surge in bookings, as visitors eager for a snowy experience keep a close watch on the weather. Hoteliers report that the forecast has brought a wave of optimism following weeks of dry weather.

The Met department has issued an orange alert for dense fog in Bilaspur district, while yellow alerts are in effect for Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, and Sirmaur. These areas are expected to experience reduced visibility, prompting authorities to advise drivers to exercise caution, particularly during early morning and late-night hours. Light rain and snowfall are also likely in the higher regions of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi.

Concerns Over Rainfall Deficit

Rainfall Deficit Continues

Himachal Pradesh is currently facing a prolonged dry spell, raising concerns among farmers and orchardists. Since October, the state has recorded significantly below-average rainfall.

From December 1 to December 25, only 0.2 mm of rain was recorded, which is 99% less than the normal average of 27.2 mm for this period. Weather experts believe that the impending western disturbance may offer some relief, even as it ushers in a wintry New Year for the hill state.
