Mumbai, recognized as India's financial hub, attracts a diverse array of migrants from various regions. Among these, a significant number hail from Himachal Pradesh, drawn by the promise of employment and improved living conditions. This influx led to the establishment of the Himachal Mitra Mandali in Chembur, which has evolved into a vital support network for Himachali expatriates over the years.
Origins of the Mandali
The roots of the Mandali can be traced back to the early 1950s. Originally named the Kangra Mitra Mandal, it was formed to represent the substantial number of migrants from the Kangra district residing in Mumbai. The migration wave from Himachal Pradesh surged during the 1940s and 50s, with families settling in neighborhoods like Kalbadevi, Girgaon Road, Khattar Gali, Phanaswadi, and Ramwadi.
In 1952, the organization was officially registered, and its name was later changed to Himachal Mitra Mandali to encompass individuals from all over Himachal Pradesh. Today, it operates as a registered society under the GST and Society Act, located at Road No. 5, Pestom Sagar, G.M. Road, Chembur, which also features a banquet hall for community gatherings.
Contributions to the Community
The Mandali aims to offer Himachalis in Mumbai a platform to maintain their cultural heritage, language, and traditions. Its notable contributions include:
- Cultural Preservation: The Mandali organizes vibrant celebrations for festivals like Holi, Diwali, Lohri, and other Himachali events, providing a stage for local folk artists to engage the youth with their cultural roots.
- Mutual Support: A cooperative credit society was created to assist members during times of illness, weddings, or emergencies, offering both financial and emotional support.
- Community Engagement: Through social programs, seminars, and gatherings, the Mandali helps migrants combat feelings of isolation in the bustling city, fostering a sense of belonging.
- Religious and Charitable Initiatives: The Mandali actively participates in religious activities, with members contributing to rituals like Shri Siddh Chand Ji ki Aarti. Its proximity to the renowned Siddhivinayak Temple enhances its role in promoting community welfare through charitable donations.
A Testament to Himachali Identity
More than just a social organization, the Mandali embodies the Himachali identity. For decades, it has served as a lifeline for countless Himachalis in Mumbai, reinforcing the idea that cultural unity persists, regardless of distance from their homeland.
Foundation by Taxi Drivers
Interestingly, the vision for this institution originated from Himachali taxi drivers in Mumbai. Pooling their resources, they worked collaboratively to prepare the land and construct the impressive building that stands today. This facility warmly welcomes Himachalis arriving in Mumbai for work, education, or medical needs, providing them with essential support and hospitality.
Recognition from Local Leaders
Bharmaur MLA Dr. Janak Raj recently attended the Pratham Shiv Nuale event at Chembur and expressed his admiration:
“Visiting this sacred place, a product of the dedication and hard work of our Himachali community in Mumbai, fills me with gratitude.”
