The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has launched a vigorous response against Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, escalating the conflict between the Congress-led state government and the BJP regarding central funding, disaster relief, and tribal development.
During a recent event in Kaza, part of the Sarkar Gaon Ke Dwar initiative, Sukhu dismissed the BJP's claims of financial mismanagement, asserting that his administration is committed to development and welfare despite facing financial and political hurdles imposed by the central government.
Sukhu emphasized, "My struggle is not for power, but for the welfare of the common man," framing the dispute as one centered on public interest rather than political ambition.
Nadda had previously criticized the Congress government for alleged misgovernance and ineffective use of central funds during his visit to Kullu, pointing out delays in crucial infrastructure projects like the Sumdo-Kaza road.
BJP's Treatment of Himachal Under Scrutiny
In response to Nadda's accusations, Sukhu claimed that the BJP-led central government has treated Himachal Pradesh unfairly, especially during natural disasters that have caused significant damage and necessitated extensive rehabilitation efforts.
He noted that his government has increased relief and compensation from state resources to assist affected families, despite what he described as insufficient support from the Centre.
The ongoing dispute highlights the critical issue of financial relations between the Centre and the state. While Nadda argues that central assistance has not been effectively utilized, Sukhu contends that pending funds and financial limitations hinder the state's development efforts.
Healthcare Funding Dispute Intensifies
Healthcare funding has become a significant point of contention, with the Sukhu administration alleging that over ₹112 crore in healthcare funds owed to Himachal Pradesh remain unallocated, countering Nadda's criticisms regarding the state's management of central assistance.
The Congress government insists that the Centre should release the necessary funds instead of questioning the state's financial practices, while the BJP maintains that the state must clarify the delays in project implementation and the effective use of already provided assistance.
ICMR Centre and Cooperative Federalism
The political friction escalated following Nadda's visit to Keylong, where he inaugurated the ICMR Centre for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research, aimed at addressing health challenges in high-altitude regions.
The Sukhu government has raised concerns about the exclusion of elected state representatives from central government initiatives, arguing that public events in Himachal Pradesh should embody cooperative federalism rather than serve as platforms for political maneuvering.
Infrastructure Projects Under Fire
The Sumdo-Kaza road has also become a flashpoint, with Nadda questioning the delays in this strategically important route, while the state government disputes claims of intentionally stalling development.
Sukhu's team argues that the state is adhering to necessary procedures and that delays involving multiple departments cannot solely be blamed on the state administration.
Political Integrity and Defections
Sukhu intensified his critique of political defections, condemning what he termed opportunistic politics and the erosion of political integrity.
In a pointed reference to former Lahaul-Spiti MLA Ravi Thakur, he urged voters to reject leaders who switch parties for personal gain, linking this issue to public trust and accountability.
Focus on Welfare and Rural Economy
Defending his government's record, Sukhu highlighted ongoing welfare initiatives despite financial constraints, emphasizing efforts to bolster the rural economy and combat drug abuse.
He presented these initiatives as proof of his administration's commitment to household welfare, job creation, and youth protection.
A Broader Political Contest
The confrontation between Sukhu and Nadda reflects a larger struggle over governance, public finances, and accountability for development delays in Himachal Pradesh.
For the BJP, the key issue is whether the state government has effectively utilized available resources, while the Congress argues that financial constraints and pending central assistance hinder its welfare commitments.
Ultimately, the resolution of these disputes will depend on official records detailing funding allocations, project delays, and the effectiveness of public spending.
Immediate Stakes for Residents
For the residents of Lahaul-Spiti, the stakes are practical: they seek reliable road access, healthcare services, disaster support, and sustainable development in a challenging geographical landscape.
As political tensions escalate, the focus remains on whether claims of financial responsibility will lead to tangible improvements in the lives of the people in Himachal Pradesh.
