Concerns Over Delayed Panchayat Elections

Lucknow, August 5 - The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has expressed its concerns regarding the delays in conducting panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh. The court emphasized that the state government should initiate preparations for elections at least two years before the term of elected local bodies expires to ensure compliance with the Constitution. This observation was made during the hearing of a public interest litigation filed by an individual named Sanjay Kumar Sharma.

The bench, comprising Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Manjiv Shukla, noted that starting preparations well in advance would help guarantee that panchayat elections are completed within a five-year timeframe.

While the state government had planned to commence the election process in May 2025, the court pointed out that elections could not be held before the term of the panchayats ends on May 26, 2026. The court has requested the state government to provide records and will review the reasons for the delay, determining whether it was due to circumstances beyond the government's control or negligence on the part of officials. The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for August 11.
