High Chances of Trump-Xi Meeting This Year, Says US Secretary of State

Potential Meeting Between Trump and Xi
On Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that there is a "high probability" of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping occurring this year, according to a report by a major news outlet.
Strong Likelihood of Meeting
During a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Rubio stated, "The odds are high. I believe both parties are eager to make it happen." He did not specify a date for the potential meeting but highlighted a "strong desire on both sides to proceed," as reported.
Meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister
Rubio's discussions included a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Kuala Lumpur, marking the first face-to-face encounter between the two nations' top diplomats amid ongoing trade disputes and geopolitical challenges in Asia.
Rubio described the hour-long conversation as "very constructive" and "positive." He acknowledged, "As two major powers, we will inevitably have disagreements, but I found the meeting to be productive, and there is much work ahead," he told reporters.
Rubio's First Trip to Asia
This visit is Rubio's inaugural trip to Asia as Secretary of State. Both leaders were present in Malaysia for regional discussions involving foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other partners, including Russia, Japan, South Korea, and Australia.
The trade relationship between the US and China has seen ups and downs since Trump resumed office earlier this year, leading to a series of retaliatory tariffs. Recently, the two countries established a trade framework during negotiations in London, which has temporarily eased tensions with a 90-day pause set to conclude in August.
Upcoming Meetings with Chinese Officials
According to reports, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to meet with Chinese officials in the upcoming weeks to further discussions.
Rubio noted that his meeting with Wang helped both sides pinpoint areas for potential collaboration. "Our message was clear – we have the chance to establish strategic stability and identify opportunities for cooperation, enhancing communication and building trust," he remarked.
