Tragic Loss of a Selfless Rescuer

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 5: The heartbreaking plea of R. Rajesh's young children, who begged to see their father one last time, resonated deeply as they mourned the flood rescue volunteer who lost his life while saving a farmer in Kannur. Their emotional cries filled the air as his body was brought back to their home in Kalliyoor on Wednesday.
As the children clung to the coffin, their inconsolable sobs echoed amidst the efforts of relatives, neighbors, and fellow rescue volunteers trying to provide comfort.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, who came to pay his respects, stood silently, visibly affected by the family's sorrow. Rajesh, celebrated for his ultimate sacrifice, was honored with full State honors during his funeral.
Numerous ministers, elected officials, and hundreds of community members gathered to bid farewell alongside Rajesh's family.
In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, the State Cabinet announced plans to complete the construction of Rajesh's unfinished home.
The tragic incident occurred at Meenthulli Thuruthu in Cherupuzha, Kannur, where Rajesh had joined rescue efforts after heavy rains and landslides caused the Kariyankode River to overflow.
A farmer named Benny found himself stranded on a river island due to the floodwaters.
Rajesh, a trained swimming and rescue instructor, along with fellow rescuers Shibin and rafter Jithin, bravely swam across the turbulent river to bring him to safety.
During their return, Rajesh selflessly gave his life jacket to the farmer.
Tragically, while trying to cross the river without the safety gear, he lost his grip on the safety rope and was swept away by the strong current.
Rescue teams located his body on Tuesday afternoon on a small island several kilometers downstream after an extensive search.
Rajesh was well-acquainted with peril.
As the president of the Adventure and Disaster Management Club (ADAMS), he had taken part in numerous rescue missions, including those during the Wayanad floods, earning a reputation as a fearless volunteer in disaster response.
A national-level throwball player and a rappelling instructor, he inspired many young individuals through his dedication to adventure sports and community service.
In his passing, Rajesh has become a symbol of bravery and altruism, a man who prioritized another's life over his own, leaving behind a grieving family and a state that honors his sacrifice.
