New Delhi/Srinagar, Mar 2: The Union Home Ministry has instructed states to keep a close watch on radical preachers promoting pro-Iran sentiments, particularly in light of protests triggered by the alleged death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to an attack by Israel and the US.

In a communication sent to all states and Union Territories on February 28, the Ministry urged local authorities to monitor social media activities linked to extremists and global terrorist organizations to avert any potential escalation of tensions.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order, warning that international events could provoke domestic unrest through inflammatory statements.

It also called for increased security measures at US and Israeli diplomatic missions to prevent any incidents and ensure public safety.

On the ground, clashes erupted in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, as demonstrators defied imposed restrictions.

Protesters marched through neighborhoods such as Qamarwari, Batmaloo, and Shalteng, voicing their anger against the US and Israel, whom they hold responsible for the Iranian leader's demise.

A significant protest was also reported in Magam along the Srinagar-Gulmarg route. A senior police official stated that restrictions were necessary to prevent disruptive elements from infiltrating the crowds and causing disturbances.

"The police are focused on preventing any exploitation of the situation by miscreants," the official remarked.

In response to the unrest, authorities have reduced internet speeds across the Valley to limit the spread of misleading or inflammatory information. Additionally, all educational institutions have been closed for two days, and upcoming examinations have been postponed.

Earlier, on Sunday, Shia mourners across various regions in India expressed their sorrow and anger over the Iranian leader's passing.

Numerous Muslim organizations nationwide declared a mourning period and organized protests on Monday to honor the memory of the Iranian leader.
