Chennai, May 9: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extensive heavy rainfall throughout Tamil Nadu in the coming two days, with 22 districts likely to experience intense downpours along with thunderstorms and lightning.
The IMD has linked this abrupt weather shift to the ongoing atmospheric conditions over the Kumari Sea region.
Areas such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tiruchy, Namakkal, and Karur are expected to face heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Chennai may see moderate rainfall in certain areas, with temperatures anticipated to stay below 38 degrees Celsius.
These unexpected summer rains have provided much-needed relief from the intense heat affecting various regions of the State. In Coimbatore, heavy rainfall impacted areas like Singanallur, Peelamedu, Ganapathy, Puliyakulam, Gandhipuram, Ukkadam, Pappanaickenpalayam, and Kuniyamuthur for over an hour on Friday night.
Waterlogging occurred in several low-lying areas, causing difficulties for both motorists and residents. Rain was also noted in Thondamuthur, Perur, Madampatti, Alandurai, and Devarayapuram, leading to a significant drop in temperatures.
Erode, which had been suffering from temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius recently, welcomed sudden showers in Erode city, Villarasampatti, and Chithode, much to the joy of the locals.
However, the rainfall also brought unfortunate incidents. In Modakurichi near Erode, a woman lost her life when a compound wall collapsed due to the heavy rains.
The Nilgiris district, including Udhagamandalam, Devala, Thorapalli, and Pandalur, experienced continuous rainfall, resulting in cooler weather conditions.
Similar weather conditions were observed in Kodaikanal, where rain was reported in areas such as Observatory, Anna Salai, Vattakanal, Pambarpuram, and Anandagiri.
Heavy rainfall was also recorded in parts of Ariyalur, Salem, Tiruvarur, and Karur districts. In Karur, several villages were flooded, submerging paddy fields that were ready for harvest.
Intermittent rain, along with thunder and lightning, was also reported across Kanniyakumari and nearby areas, including Nagercoil.
