Health Concerns Emerge as Students Fall Ill in Kerala School
Health Crisis in Wayanad District
A wave of panic swept through Wayanad district in Kerala when around 150 students from a government-aided upper primary school reported symptoms such as fever and vomiting over the past few days. Out of these, 38 students were admitted to the Sultan Bathery Taluk Hospital due to persistent symptoms, prompting health officials to closely monitor the situation. The affected students are from the Mar Baselios Aided Upper Primary School in Koilady, where authorities have implemented precautionary measures to prevent further spread of illness.
School Closure for Safety
In light of the illness affecting several students, officials have declared a week-long closure of the school as a precautionary measure. Health authorities stated that this decision was made to ensure the safety of the students while investigations into the causes of the infections continue. The District Medical Officer (DMO) reassured parents and residents that there is no need for alarm and that the situation is under control. Given the rising number of students requiring medical assistance, a special ward has been established at the Sultan Bathery Taluk Hospital. Medical professionals are monitoring the children and providing necessary treatment. Officials reported that most students are responding well and their conditions are stable. Additionally, one teacher at the school has exhibited similar symptoms and is also under observation.
Investigation Underway
The exact cause of the illness remains unidentified. According to local officials, some students began showing symptoms as early as June 1. However, the precise reason for the sudden outbreak has yet to be determined. Health department teams have collected samples from the school and surrounding areas for laboratory testing. Authorities are now awaiting results to ascertain whether the illness is linked to food, water, viral infections, or another source. Representatives from the local council visiting the hospital reported that the overall condition of the affected children is satisfactory, with no significant deterioration in their health.
